Functional Analysis and Its Applications Department

Functional Analysis and Its Applications Department was formed in 2006 after the restructuring of the Department of Higher Mathematics at the Vladimir State University.
Higher Mathematics Department was organized in 1963. Its first manager was the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, associate professor L. Groza. Initially the Department was small — in 1964 only 11 professors worked there. Most of them were graduates from the physics and mathematics faculty of the Vladimir Pedagogical Institute.
For almost 50 years of its existence the department has undergone considerable change. In 1965 the department was headed by a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, associate professor B. Nikitin who invested much effort for the development of the department and its staffing. At that time a lot of graduates from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Lomonosov Moscow State University became techers at the department. They were K. Valikov (arrived 1964), V. Kuznetsov (arrived 1967), S. Maximov (arrived 1968), V. Zhikov (arrived 1968), etc. Great help to this process was given by the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, professor S. Maximov who headed the department from 1975 to 1984. At different times the department was headed by K. Valikov, A. Zateev, S. Maksimov, S. Tankeev, N. Dubrovin.
In 2006 some faculties and departments of the Vladimir State University were restructured. Among other things two independent departments (Functional Analysis and Its Applications (FA&A) and Algebra and Geometry (A&G) included in the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Physics (FPMF)) were formed on the basis of the Department of Higher Mathematics of the Faculty of Computer Sciences and Applied Mathematics (FCS&AM). Since the founding of the department the doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor A. Davydov was a head of the department. Under his leadership teaching staff is constantly improving the its qualification, participate in the Russian and international mathematical conferences, actively engaged in research work. A characteristic feature of the personnel policy of professor A. Davydov is a desire to bring research and teaching activities to students and young scientists, a desire to imbue them with tenacity, flexibility of research and life views.
Currently the staff of the functional analysis and its applications department is involved in a number of government-funded research projects, collaborates with foreign universities, carries out mathematical training of bachelors and masters of many areas, teaches specialists of highest qualification. During the school year at the department meetings of two mathematical seminars continue weekly. During a summer the staff of the department organizes the International Conference on Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems and International Conference on Mathematical Control Theory and Mechanics in the city of Suzdal, Vladimir region.
